He looked skeptical, though he gave no response, simply looking off across the ride to study her goddaughter once more. His gaze contained scrutiny that said he was searching for vampiric traits in the child who seemed average and happy, if a bit peculiar for knowing about vampires and werewolves rather than fairy tales. Wanting him distracted, she pretended to stretch and deliberately kicked him in the leg, jarring his attention back to her with a hiss of pain.
âNo games, no lies, Hayes. Why are you here?â she demanded as the ride began to move. âNo lies.â
âI enjoy the company of a gorgeous redhead and the nausea brought on by the Tilt-a-Whirl,â he informed her without hesitation. His mouth was open to continue before the elephant smacked him in the face. âOw!â
Aria tucked the elephant back into the crook of her arm and held onto the bar, shooting him a glare. âI meant in Anberlin. Youâve seen Iâm not a threat to this town, and Iâd assume youâre finished with your vampire nest or you wouldnât be wasting time at a fair no matter how much you love nausea.â
âCanât I just enjoy your company?â The words were barely out before the jolting of the ride sent him crashing into her shoulder. A sound of pain escaped her while he mumbled an apology, pushing himself back to his side. âOr maybe I just like the town.â
âNo one likes Anberlin except long-time residents so try again.â
His next words were lost in the rapidly increasing spinning of the Tilt-a-Whirl so she gave up attempting to carry on a conversation, allowing the twisting and spinning of the ride to generate a barrier between them. Its rough lurches would occasionally send her shoulder crashing into Jeremyâs, though he played it smarter than her high school boyfriends who would have used the opportunity to cop a feel rather than help her back to her side. Her eyes gave up their attempts to keep track of Noah and Willow, deciding instead to focus on staying on her side of the bucket-like seat which almost always ended with him being slung across to nearly in her lap.
Despite her irritation, she found herself laughing at his facial expressions and sounds of pain whenever her weight slammed him into the booth. He mumbled something about âstupid elephantâ at one point then shoved the elephant onto the floor between them without another word. Eventually, she stopped attempting to stay on her side of the booth and enjoyed the ride, elbowing him a time or two more than the ride required, though theyâd both slid onto his side by the time the brightly colored buckets came to a stop. One of his arms had wound up around her, possibly an anchor to prevent the constant slam of her weight into him, the other leading down to a hand clutching the lap bar with white knuckles. Her pink elephant was crammed into the small amount of space between their legs, impossibly squished and the smallest bit dirty.
